The Rams traded All-Pro DE Sean Gilbert to Washington for the Redskins sixth overall pick in the 1996 draft to make certain they got Lawrence. An aggressive and explosive runner, he was the first RB picked and arguably the best player in the draft. Phillips was the 16th player the Rams have drafted from Nebraska. He ended his college career with 2,777 rushing yards for a 6.2 yard average. Phillips led St. Louis in rushing and showed some big time flashes with two 100-yard games. Born in Arkansas, he grew up in Los Angeles.
